Maine Employers Put Culture First for Employees and Job-Seekers

These days, it’s not enough for businesses to care only about the bottom line. The best employers care about workplace culture, establishing a healthy, fulfilling work environment with a strong mission statement — values that match their products and services.

And employees reward them for it. Gen Z and Millennial workers are three times more likely to commit to their employer when the work feels meaningful, and twice as likely to recommend the company to others. Workplace culture isn’t just a “nice-to-have,” and Maine employers are paying attention. Four Maine-based companies recently made the Forbes list of “Best Employers for Company Culture”: Wex in Portland, Jackson Laboratory in Bar Harbor, IDEXX Laboratories in Westbrook, and L.L. Bean in Freeport. To quote Wex President and CEO Melissa Smith, “Culture is how strategy becomes execution. It helps us serve customers better, operate with discipline and continue building a company that can create lasting value for shareholders.”

This mindset makes companies like Wex more appealing to job-seekers. When employers prioritize workplace culture, turnover goes down while recruitment and retention go up.

There is more good news: Numerous Maine employers need human capital that can contribute positively to corporate culture. Wex, Jackson Laboratory, IDEXX Laboratories, and L.L. Bean are all hiring — right here in Maine. From marketers to scientists and shift supervisors, countless opportunities exist for job-seekers to join productive teams that are making a true impact in their communities and for the broader economy. Whether it’s a creative position in Portland or a retail job in Freeport, company “Career” pages are valuable resources for job-seekers to explore, updating regularly with new roles and responsibilities.

Across our state, there are tens of thousands of available jobs. More than that, there are tens of thousands of opportunities for Mainers to join a positive culture and make it even stronger. We all know that there is more to work than wages, salaries and benefits, and employers are backing it up — while paying well, too.
