Maine's commitment to youth career development is taking shape through an innovative network of partnerships with the Maine Career Exploration Program, offering multiple entry points for young people to explore their professional futures. Through strategic collaboration between state agencies, educational institutions, and community organizations, Maine is creating a comprehensive ecosystem of career exploration opportunities that offer young people many ways to participate!
Department of Education
The Maine Department of Education has made a substantial investment in the future workforce, awarding over $5.6 million from the grant funds to 26 educational institutions across the state. This funding supports extended learning opportunities (ELOs) that can include 75 hours of paid work experience, giving students practical, hands-on exposure to potential career paths while earning income.
Jobs for Maine Graduates
Jobs for Maine Graduates (JMG) has emerged as a crucial partner in this initiative, extending career exploration programs to 90 high schools across the state. Their program, specifically designed for rising juniors and seniors, combines extended learning opportunities with paid work experiences and personalized coaching. JMG's mission focuses on supporting students who face educational barriers, providing them with the guidance needed to pursue meaningful careers and continued education.
Students now have the opportunity to earn the Maine Career Exploration Badge, a credential that represents significant investment in their professional development. By completing 40 hours of meaningful work experience and participating in a structured exploration and reflection process, students can earn this badge along with a $500 academic award. This approach combines practical experience with financial incentive, encouraging more young people to engage in career exploration.
Community-Based Organizations
Through the Governor's Children's Cabinet initiative, five community organizations are bringing career opportunities directly to disadvantaged youth in their regions:
- Learning Works Youth Build (Cumberland County)
- Eastern Maine Development Corporation (Penobscot County)
- Midcoast Youth Center (Sagadahoc County)
- Tree Street Youth (Androscoggin County)
- Aroostook County Action Program (Aroostook County)
These organizations provide crucial access to paid work opportunities and valuable employment experience, ensuring career exploration reaches young people in their own communities.
