How do I get started?
As a participant in the program, you can get started in several ways. The employer you want to work for can contact a Program Coordinator on your behalf or you can talk to your school's Extended Learning Coordinator or Guidance Counselor or a participating community-based organization's Workforce Navigator. They will be able to help you find a paid work experience.

How do I get paid?
Manpower is our partner and they work closely with the Program Coordinators (such as an Extended Learning Opportunity (ELO) Coordinator or Workforce Navigator) to successfully onboard and prepare program participants for your upcoming assignments. Manpower handles payments to the participants (you) and is a contact to your school's Extended Learning Coordinator. You can learn more from their Training and Policy Handbook.

Are there any jobs a young person cannot do in the workplace?
Yes, all jobs must comply with local, state, and federal laws. A more comprehensive list of prohibited jobs can be found here.

Who is the Program Coordinator? How do I find one?
The Program Coordinator is responsible for program implementation and acts as a liaison between the young person and employer. The Program Coordinators either work within the schools or for a community-based organization.

Is there a mentorship element in this program?
Yes! Employers will identify a program mentor within their organization so you learn about Maine businesses, industries, and opportunities.

What if the job description changes during the work experience?
If anything changes during the work experience, please contact the Program Coordinator you are working with to discuss.

I want to keep working at this business. Can I do this?
Possibly! The Maine Career Exploration program can pay a young person for up to 75 hours of work at a worksite. Your employer can contact your Program Coordinator to discuss whether additional funds are available to extend.

How often will I get paid?
You will be paid weekly.
You have the option to get paid by direct deposit if you have a bank account!
You also will have the option to sign up for paycards if you don't have a bank at this time that will have your paycheck deposited on there and you use it just like any other debit card!

Can the company hire me afterward?
Absolutely! The Maine Career Exploration program’s mission is to connect young people in Maine to the many businesses and organizations in an effort to grow our talent. Should a business decide to hire you after your placement they will need to conduct their regular onboarding paperwork as you will no longer be covered under the program’s insurance and wages.
